The VARIMAX decanter is specially designed for the removal of solid matter from sludge.
Sludge is pumped from the Sludge Treatment Tank through a special skimmer unit to the decanter, hereby ensuring that the sludge to be treated contains a minimum of water. The decanter bowl rotates at a speed of 3.250 rpm, resulting in a centrifugal force of approximately 2.000 g. The centrifugal force causes solid matter (“Super Sludge”) to be deposited on the inside wall of the rotating cylinder, where it is propelled by a conical conveyor screw to the discharge ports, and from here to the Super Sludge Reservoir. The Double Helix Screw Conveyor ensures optimal conditions for the settling and removal of Super Sludge.
At the other end of the decanter, the liquid phase passes through the Water/Oil Separation Unit. The now de-watered clarified oil flows into a reservoir, from where it is automatically transferred to a service tank. The water component passes through a surge chamber and can be led directly to the Oily Water tank.

All functions, except the periodic emptying of the Super Sludge Reservoir are automatically controlled.

Experience has shown that the clarified oil, now has a water contents between 1 and 10% and a much reduced solids contents, is easily reused.

Installation overview

Operation
All functions of the decanter are automatically controlled and monitored from the control panel. The unit is easily operated by using the start/stop switch. The unit is equipped with monitors for excessive bearing temperature, excessive vibrations and motor or pump malfunctions. In case of alarm the unit shuts down automatically.

The VARIMAX decanter is designed as a “start and forget” system with automatic control of pumps and motors etc. The only manual operation connected to the running of the system is the periodical transfer of “Super Sludge” from the Super Sludge Reservoir.

When a “high level” indicator in this reservoir is activated, a warning light on the control panel lights up, indicating that it must be emptied within the next 4 - 6 hours, else an alarm indicator will be activated and the unit shut down.
The “Super Sludge” is transferred to suitable container such as barrels by means of a conveyor pump, which is heated and fitted with a feeder. This operation is repeated every 15 - 25 hours.
When not actually treating sludge, the decanter can be switched to “Idle Mode Operation” where the pumps are stopped and the speed and power consumption of the unit is greatly reduced.

Service and maintenance
The VARIMAX decanter is self-cleaning and requires a minimum of service and maintenance. The internal bearings are greased for life, and the main bearings are equipped with automatic grease dispensers. No cleanings of discs etc. is required.
